You manage to create a softness to your portraits. How do you do this? Is it a matter of just going over the same strokes again and again with a soft touch? Or do you focus on using color to create that smoothness?

I use a big brush.  Big brushes cover a lot of area so you don't need
to blend as much.  I learned this from oil painting.  My instructors used to
use a number 4 filbert brush to paint highlights in the eye.  Big brushes are key :)

You know what, that makes a lot of sense. For my plein airs I use larger brushes to block in the bigger volumes of shapes, so its not hard to imagine the same would stand for anatomy as well. Its easy to get lost in painting details. I'll try to discipline myself into using larger brushes when painting people. Thanks so much!
